History and Traditions
The Dube family of Heeran Khedi has their ancestral roots to the village of Heeran Khedi, near present-day Indore in central India. At a later time, Shri Maganlal Ji Dube relocated to the city of Indore.
The family traces their gotra (i.e., lineage) to Maharishi Bharadwaj1 and venerates Goddess Siddhidatri2 as their kuldevi (i.e., family goddess). These affiliations continue to be reflected in traditional observances, including fasting on the Ashtami (the eighth day) and the kuldevi puja on the Navami (the ninth day) of Ashwin Shukla3, maintained as expressions of continuity, reverence, and devotion. Following thekuldevi puja, prasad is prepared during which a coconut is first offered in the aarti, prasad is prepared consisting of dal, rice, kheer, gud (jaggery), kaddu (pumpkin), bhindi (okra), a chutney made of coriander and green chilli, lemon, and served along with wheat roti. This practice reflects both devotion to the kuldevi and the importance of eating together as a family.
The Dube family of Heeran Khedi is connected to the Joshi family of Alirajpur through Smt. Sheela Joshi, whose marriage with Dr. Vijay Kumar Joshi joined the two families.
- Maharishi Bharadwaj – Bharadwaja was one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages) of the Vedic tradition. He and his disciples are credited as the authors of Mandala 6 in the Rigveda. He is known for being the father of Guru Dronacharya, and the guru to both the Pandava and Kaurava princes, as described in the Mahabharata. ↩︎
- Goddess Siddhidatri – one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Navadurga) and is revered as the bestower of siddhis (spiritual powers and attainments). ↩︎
- Ashwin Shukla – The bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin. The eighth day (Ashtami) and ninth day (Navami) are traditionally marked by fasting and kuldevi worship within the family. ↩︎
